AKSAI, West Kazakhstan Oblast, 2 September 2005 - On the eve of the new school year, Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V. (KPO) gave a wonderful present to the schoolchildren of Zhambyl village of Syrymsky District.

KPO has provided $400,000 for the construction of a new secondary school in Zhambyl village. The school was built to a very high standard, and its modern design includes a sports-training gymnasium, rest area, spacious classrooms, library, kitchen, buffet room, external boiler house and water supply system.

At the opening ceremony, Akim of WKO Nurgali Ashimov congratulated the villagers, schoolchildren, teachers and parents on the opening of the new school and expressed his gratitude to the investor.

Commenting on KPO’s participation in this project, KPO Operations Director Cameron Crawford said: "I am always pleased to attend such events, especially when it is about supporting education in our region. I hope that the children of Zhambyl village will enjoy their new school.”

In addition, as sponsorship aid for the Knowledge Day, other schoolchildren of the Burlinsky District received presents from KPO. 255 children from needy families of 7 villages of Burlinsky District were presented with satchels, sets of notebooks and stationary.

Apart from the annual $10 million investment in social projects in WKO, KPO undertakes sponsorship programmes to support projects in areas of healthcare, sports, education and culture.
